This time last year I was sitting in a Mexican restaurant in Paris with Marc and Shanta. This year I am in a tiny village in the middle of Kenya.
My Mom called this morning to wish me a Happy Birthday by singing to me. I then went for tea with the staff at my project and they surprised me with a cake and a rendition of Happy Birthday that I am not familiar with. They got the words right but the tune was waaaay off. It was very sweet of them; since most Kenyan's don't really acknowledge birthdays.
Then Jen called and we caught up a bit; while Penny apparently ate something plastic. Still haven't named my cat yet... but I am strongly considering "Cheese" hehe.
Tonight I'm going to visit my site mate and the British volunteer in her town. They are going to cook me a mexican dinner. I hope it includes cheese; that stuffs hard to come by here. Anyhoo; that's all I'm doin for my birthday. I definitely miss the days of going out in San Jose with my girls... sigh...
Ok; that's all for now. Maybe something exciting will happen for my birthday and I'll have a fun and exciting post for tomorrow. :-)
*** UPDATE***
So, on my birthday I saw a boda boda guy (they give people rides around town on the backs of their bikes) get hit by a matatu (kinda like a public transportation van); Jillian dropped and broke my camera! So, that really sucks. Gonna try to get it fixed but since I'm in Kenya I doubt that's gonna happen. So, no more pictures; I might cry.
But on a happier note; we made yummy Mexican food and I learned how to make tortilla chips from scratch. My brother called while I was doing this and I think he was wondering why on earth I was MAKING tortilla chips when normal people just go out and buy them. Well not in Kenya. Most people don't know what a tortilla chip is.

Happy happy birthday! May you get lots of love, and cheese, from everyone around you!
Hey Maya,
Have you had any luck with getting your camera fixed? I actually have a pretty good digital camera that I retired recently when I bought a new one. If you think you might need it, let me know and I'll package it up and send it off. Of course, it might not get to you until Christmas! :)
