Hi All! Sorry for the long time between blog entries but I’ve been kinda busy which is a good thing I suppose. Let’s see what is there to update you on. I named my cat Lola; a suggestion by Jen. She has grown a lot so she no longer fits in the palm of my hand. She enjoys chasing the chickens that wander into my yard. Though she can’t quite catch them yet. I’m not sure what I’m going to do when she is able to catch them. Guess I’ll cross that bridge when I get to it. I don’t think my neighbors will be happy if their chickens start to disappear. Sorry; no pictures but I will be getting a camera soon.
For the last couple of weeks the sponsors for my project came to visit from the
As for now I am working on a couple of projects at site. Getting a Mobile VCT (Voluntary Counseling and Testing) to come out to my village and test the people there. Many of the women in the village are widows who’s husbands passed away because they got “sick” as they like to say. So, the chances of the widows being positive are pretty good. So after talking to many of the Women’s groups I think I’ve convinced them that it would be beneficial to find out their status. Though the round trip to a VCT is about ksh100 for them which is a lot of money for someone in this community. So, I’m hoping the VCT is successful. With all the planning I have to do for it I’m thinking I should be able to have it in January sometime.
I’m also working on getting the sad little playground at my site that is falling apart repaired/upgraded for the orphans. It looks like I’m going to have to write some sort of proposal for that but there is a guy in Kenya who’s working on building playgrounds for kids that one of the other volunteers put me in contact with. So I’m hoping he will be able to help me out as well.
The previous volunteer is still working with the project and has a University Scholarship she wants to give to someone in the community. So I’ve been helping gather information on that. We start interviewing potential people for the scholarship tomorrow at 8:00AM. So that should be interesting. Of the applicants we’ve gotten so far there are about 15 or 20 that qualify so we are going interview them and see how involved they are in the community and what they will be studying in school as well as assess their financial needs. The goal is to have someone come back and work for the project for at least one year after they finish school in order to benefit the community. It’s definitely going to be hard to make a decision because all of them deserve the chance to go to school; it’s just a matter of money. But thank goodness; the decision is not left to me as to who gets the scholarships. That will be left to the previous volunteer and her charity.
I guess that’s all for now. I’ll try to update more soon. Hope everyone is doing well.
