Was kinda bitter sweet. For some unknown reason 2 of our fellow would-be volunteers were “training separated”; that was a new term for us. This all happened the day before we swore in and was pretty depressing; to say the least. We didn’t even get and explaination :-(
Actual Swear in was pretty cool though. We had the ceremony at the Ambassadors home in Nairobi. They served us American snacks of Dorito’s; mini snickers and Oreos!! (Send OREOS!); FRITOS and chocolate chip cookies. Perhaps you think this silly but for a bunch of 20 somethings that have been missing their American junk food for the past 2 and a half months … it was heaven.

After we snacked for a bit we started the ceremony. The Kenyans sang their national anthem and then they looked to the volunteers to sing ours. Despite the fact that I personally have no musical talent whatsoever I think we managed to pull it off pretty well. And it sounded like we all actually remembered the words; even if some of us didn’t… hehe :-)
There were then a number of speeches; lots of pictures taken and then the actual swearing in and passing out of certificates of completion for training.(Kenyan’s really like their certificates; I’ve learned). We tehn had more snacks; kibobs of meat; meatballs; egg rolls; humus…I was in heaven.
So, now I’m officially a Peace Corps Volunteer. You can now change the PCT to a PCV on my mail… hehe.
