I actually got to spend Bastille Day in Paris. It was pretty awesome. We arrived in Paris the afternoon of the 13th with about 17 kids that we had to deliver to their parents at the train station. We then had an interesting night out with some other American Village counselors that were in town for the weekend. I’m not sure what time I got home but I didn’t wake up until noon the next day, so that should tell you something.
After a very late lunch on the 14th I got to hang out with Marc and Shanta for a bit. They had plans to see the Alvin Alley Dance group so I didn’t get to do anything with them for the Bastille day festivities but it was nice to have a relaxing chunk of time with them.
After hanging out with Marc and Shanta we headed to dinner and then to the Eiffel Tower for Fireworks; which we missed. But that was ok because on the lawn near the Eiffel Tower people were setting off their own fireworks so we got to see a show anyway.
As you can see, we were very pleased…
Getting home however, was a complete nightmare. Someone told us that the metro had extended its hours to 2AM which was not true. So then we thought we could take a cab back to our hotel but every cab we saw was full. We walked and walked and walked for more than an hour and then saw a night bus but it was packed to the brim and didn’t stop. A few more of those passed us up until we got to the Louvre…and if you know anything about Paris you know the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre are no where near each other. So, we were exhausted to say the least. We found a couple of cabs and got to our hotel. But the doorman was sleeping, so we had a wait another 10 minutes (ringing the doorbell constantly) for him to wake up and let us in.
But, I must say…Bastille Day in Paris…can I really complain?!?
